i just learned about some things that i missed at the fair:

*demolition derby: people bring their beater wheels to play bumper cars until only one vehicle is left standing.
*grease pole race: on a 15-20 foot pole, place a $100 bill at the top. people fight one another to reach the money. the catch? the pole is greased down with crisco.

amazon is acting as a grocery store now. thiry-four product categories. wow.

i am starting to get homesick... my little brother and i were so cute! i was a little monkey even at a young age *smile*

The Hick County Fair

i love county fairs. the town that i'm staying in is pretty much a farming community, which makes everything that much better.

so what did i do at said event?
- laughed as the carnie guessed that jeff was 23 (~6 years off!)
- won a big nemo floaty toy because of that guy's bad age judgement
- watched a tractor pull
- admired an antique tractor display
- cheered on our favorite polish chicken
- argued over the sex of the cows/bulls
- baby-talked to the cutest little billy goat gruffs
- got lip-nipped and nuzzled by said cuties
- ran from the foul odor of the swine
- happily gave nemo to the lemonade lady because i didn't want to carry him around
- rode on the zipper
- raced on tipsy ladder (and subsequently became drenched from the many falls)
- enjoyed the huge raindrops that seem to be signature of the east coast

i leave in a week... it's been good.

went up to philly last night with a few coworkers to hit the walls at go vertical. i haven't been climbing since school ended... and i find that i am severely out of shape. now, my forearms are a-achin'.

i miss international talk like a pirate day. look it up. www.talklikeapirate.com. there are some high-quality pickup lines, but i don't want to spoil them until september 19 rolls around.

well, okay. i'll say one... *searching, searching, searching*... most are a bit too raunchy for the every-day xanga-er... how 'bout this: "that's the finest pirate booty i've ever laid eyes on." arrrrrr!

i miss the quirky oregonians who celebrate this hardcore. TLAPD 2003, a group of my friends (approximately a dozen in all) got together to watch the first pirates of the carribean. afterwards, we went to sherries for milkshakes and sundaes. we left a hearty tip to the waitress (25%!), though probably 5% of that was in pennies, laid out on the table to spell the word "ARRR!" that same year, someone decked out his car so it looked like a pirate ship. the physics teacher drew pirates and sailboats all over the day's exams, and all the questions were based on blackbeard and jack sparrow's adventures in the deep blue sea (projectile cannons, weighted pulleys, etc).

speaking of pennies, i plan on aiding my brother in his crusade against the penny. my working title is "vice-president-comma-marketing." citizens for retiring the penny, unite! (ps, he has been having 3 interviews a day about this penny thing... it might actually happen! he's even popular enough to be getting hate mail. i wish i could be so lucky!) take a look at the recent time magazine article. he's practically... famous? http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1211567-1,00.html

i only have 2.5 weeks left on the east coast. it's been a really great summer. living with my brother has been amazing. we get along so well! plus, it's been a real pleasure seeing my extended family more often. today, jeff and i helped out at cousin kelly's summer camp. she put together a week-long camp for my little second cousins (ages 5-10), and all the family is helping out by running activities. jeff and i did experiments: 1) build the highest tower you can with raw spaghetti, mini marshmallows, two small pieces of tape, and four straws; and 2) the egg drop experiment using a plastic bag (to contain messes), 6 straws, 2 feet of tape, 1 piece of newspaper, and unlimited marshmallows. the kids really enjoyed it! *awwwww*
